Osteopathy: What It Is and How It Can Help with Back Pain, Neck Pain and Headaches

Osteopathy is an independent medical discipline based on hands-on assessment and treatment. It looks at the body as one unit in which bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and nerves work together. Pain in one area can come from a problem or tension elsewhere, so the osteopath does not look only at the painful spot.

How does an osteopath work?

The osteopath starts by asking about your condition, health history, lifestyle and work, then examines your posture, joint movement and muscle tension by hand. Treatment may include gentle hands-on techniques such as joint mobilisation, muscle stretching and soft-tissue work, along with exercises and advice to keep improving at home.

Conditions it may help with

  • Lower back pain and neck pain
  • Tension in the shoulder and upper back muscles
  • Some headaches linked to neck muscle tension
  • Joint stiffness and limited movement
  • Pain from long sitting or work posture
  • Some sports injuries and muscle pain

What to expect in a session

  • A first assessment with enough time for listening and examination.
  • Hands-on techniques chosen to suit your condition; you can ask questions or stop at any time.
  • You may feel mild tiredness or soreness for a short time afterwards; this varies from person to person.
  • A treatment plan and suitable exercises; some people need more than one session.

To be clear: osteopathy does not replace a medical examination and is not suitable for every condition. The osteopath may refer you to a doctor or ask for tests when needed.

When to see a doctor straight away

Seek urgent medical care, before any hands-on treatment, if you have a severe injury or a hard fall, fever with back pain, new weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, difficulty controlling urine or bowels, chest pain, or a sudden severe headache that is unusual for you.
