Scoliosis in Children: How to Spot It Early and When to See a Physiotherapist

Illustration of a sideways curve in a child's spine (scoliosis)

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curve of the spine, which looks like an S or a C when viewed from behind. It is usually found during growth years, and in most cases there is no clear cause. It may not cause pain at first, so it can go unnoticed, which is why early observation matters.

Signs to watch for

  • One shoulder higher than the other.
  • One shoulder blade sticking out more than the other.
  • Uneven waist or hips, or the body leaning to one side.
  • A bulge on one side of the back when the child bends forward.

How parents can help

  1. Regular checks: Look at your child's back from behind every so often, especially during growth spurts, and notice any change.
  2. Good sitting posture: Teach a comfortable sitting position at home and at school, which reduces strain on the back and neck.
  3. The school bag: Choose a bag that suits your child's size, avoid heavy loads, and carry it on both shoulders.
  4. Sports and swimming: They strengthen the body's muscles and improve fitness and body awareness, and they benefit children's health in general.
  5. Ask early: If you notice any change, do not wait; see a physiotherapist.
  6. Early intervention: It gives better results when exercises and guidance suited to the child's condition are followed.

To be clear: sitting posture, the school bag and sport support a healthy back, but they do not replace a check-up and do not guarantee that scoliosis will not appear. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination, and a doctor may request an X-ray when needed.
